Six members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) were arrested Monday morning for protesting against the continued detention of former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye and soaring essential product prices.
The group led by Soroti District Woman Member of Parliament Anna Adeke Ebaju and Kampala Deputy Lord mayor Nyanjura Doreen was intercepted around Mulago and taken to Wandegeya Police Station.
After several hours, they were arraigned at the Law Development Centre court and charged with inciting violence. They went ahead and denied the charges and applied for bail, but the hearing was stopped mid-way with the magistrate reasoning that it was already 5pm and therefore, court proceedings could not continue.
The magistrate ruled the group be remanded to Luzira Prison. The group is expected to return to court today for further hearing of their bail application.
Meanwhile, Besigye who is still remanded in Luzira appealed against a rule by Buganda Road Magistrate to pay UGX 30 million as part of the prerequisites for his bail.
The former FDC president was arrested in downtown Kampala protesting government inaction to buffer vulnerable Ugandans against skyrocketing commodity prices.
