ENTEBBE – Muwaya Kakaire has been installed as President of the Lions Club of Entebbe for the 2026/2027 term, pledging to fast-track pending projects and recruit more members to strengthen support for vulnerable and underprivileged communities.
Taking over from Dr Edwin Nuwagira, Kakaire said her priority is a fundraising drive to support the construction of a home for the elderly. He also called on residents to join the club to expand its reach.
Speaking as the chief guest during the change of power ceremony, Entebbe Municipal Council Town Clerk Emmanuel Mugisha pledged personal and institutional backing to the club.
He announced a $1,000 personal contribution toward the club’s $10,000 fundraising target.
“I will not stop at that. I will also talk to my council and see what the council can contribute,” Mugisha said, adding, “We will give you all the support that you need, and you will have our back.”
Mugisha singled out plans to upgrade the Entebbe Children’s Park as a key area for partnership. “I don’t want to commit, but I promise this is something we can discuss with my mayor, council, and executive to see how we can improve and make it better,” he told the new Lions leadership.
Mugisha, who described himself as “passionate about greening,” urged the club to prioritise green space in its projects.
He cited Masaka City, where he said a former green area was fenced off for a Lions school project, saying, “I was not happy because it was a green place. I hope that’s not what we are planning,”
In addition, Mugisha said, “We should make it green. If you come up with good proposals, I’m sure my council will be ready to inquire into your proposal.”
He pointed to recent work at the Mayor’s Garden, where the council paved walkways and planted flowers, as the standard he wants replicated across town.
Congratulating Kakaire, Mugisha issued a challenge: “Let a table feed you before they see you, because where there is need, there is a lion.”
He closed with Muhammad Ali’s quote, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” adding, “As Lions, your mantra is to serve. We will serve with you.”
Kakaire’s 2026/2027 leadership team is expected to unveil its full annual work plan in the coming weeks.
