Uganda Silverbacks forward, Ishmail Wainwright has joined the Phoenix Suns on a two-way contract.
The 27-year-old earlier joined Toronto Raptors and that’s where he spent the preseason campaign fighting for one of the last roaster spots but instead he was waived.
Wainwright left Baylor in 2017 after being undrafted. He decided to leave the USA to play professional basketball in Germany before he moved to France where he spent one season.
Wainwright will fill the Sun’s second two-way spot alongside Chandler Hutchison.
The Sun’s summer league roaster consisted of mostly players with international experience and few with none in the NBA.
This awarded Wainwright the golden chance to the Phoenix Suns. The move saw the forward push his excitement on his socials.
“Blessed to be a part of the Phoenix Suns family. Time to work,” he posted on his Twitter account.
Wainwright had a solid season in 2021 posting 11.6 points and 4.6 rebounds for SIG Strasbourg which pulled the attention of the Toronto Raptors.
The Canada based team signed Wainwright on a two-year contract on August 7, 2021, before the same side waived him on Sunday, October 17.
Wainwright adds physicality and depth behind the small/power forward position.
Phoenix Suns started the 2021/22 campaign with a 110-98 loss to Denver Nuggets. They return to action away to Los Angels Lakers on Saturday morning.
However, Los Angles come to this much-anticipated fixture a wounded side having lost both legs last season 123-94 and 117-105 respectively.
Phoenix Suns are an American Professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona.
Phoenix Suns are a member of the league’s Western Conference in the Pacific Conference and host their games from Footprint Center.
The 58-year old team has won the Western conference on three different occasions 1976, 1993 and recently 2021 however they eventually lost the NBA finals to Milwaukee Bucks.
