Taxi Operators arrested in Entebbe after riot

Around 10 matatu taxi operators have been arrested following violent protests ensued on Monday in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District.

The matatu taxi operators working the Entebbe-Kampala route were protesting against private vans (commonly known as drones) that operate on the same route who they accuse of illegally operating without paying the required taxes subjected to them.

According to the matatu taxi operators leadership, the emergence of private vans has snatched their client base and they can barely make a living.

Police is currently detaining them at Entebbe Central Police Station awaiting arraignment as stipulated by law.

“The drones are clean, comfortable and always on time,” said Arafat Kawooya who is a resident of Entebbe. “The traditional matatus should focus more on how to improve their services. Many of them lack basic customer care.” he added

According to Entebbe Municipal Division A chairperson, Jane Scholastica Baguma the drone taxis are legally operating and free to operate in the area. She also urged the matatu taxi operators to pick a thing or two from the private van operators.
