SUPL: Mucureezi Scores Screamer As Vipers Ascend Past Busoga United

Paul Mucureezi scored a screamer from long range to cement Vipers’ victory past Busoga United in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Wednesday.

Mucureezi and Hillary Mukundane were on the scoresheet as Robertinho Oliviera’s charges went four points ahead of KCCA FC who sit second on the log.

The victory meant the hosts were returning to winning ways after suffering a 1-0 loss to Tooro United in their previous game.

In the ninth minute, Milton Karisa was brought down in the area and Vipers were awarded a penalty but Bright Anukani stepped up and hit the ball way above the cross bar.

Anukani later looped the ball to meet Yunus Sentamu in the area but the forward’s last touch was heavy hence losing possession to Bithum Douglas.

In the 25th minute, Hillary Mukundane climbed highest to node home Anukani’s sweat delivery from the right flank.

Anukani laid an inch-perfect freekick in the area but Livingstone Mulondo was seconds late from tapping home from close range to extend the hosts’ lead.

Karisa found himself in the best of positions but fumbled with the ball once again steps away from the goal to burry a clear cut chance.

After the break, Busoga United had an opportunity to level matters after Paul Sekulima laid a cut back in the box but Shaka Sozzi and Fredrick Ngalo collided and the ball went out for a corner kick.

Second-half substitute Najib Yiga curled home a sweat cross meeting Karisa at the far post but the forward fumbled with the ball once again.

Halid Lwaliwa’s powerful header off Anukani’s corner kick was palmed away by Busoga’s custodian Andrew Ssekandi.

With seven minutes on the clock, Paul Mucurezi scored a thunderbolt from a long-range to add salt in Busoga’s wounds.

The result leaves the Venoms at the top of the log with 46 points while Busoga United sits 11th with 21 points after 21 games.

In the next fixture, Vipers will make a short trip to MTN Omondi Stadium to play against KCCA on Saturday March 26 while Busoga host BUL on Friday.
