Express FC registered a 1-0 narrow win against Gaddafi in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at Betway Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Friday evening.
Express FC had the chance to lead the game in the seventh minute when Charles Musige was served by Onen’s poor clearance but the midfielder’s powerful effort in the box went high and beyond.
Both sides staged great and ultimate hunger for the ball which resulted in continuous and nasty tackles but Express later press the attacking button.
With four minutes to play, Eric Kenzo Kambale raised high to head home Sadiq Ssekyembe’s cross and placed the host in the driving seat of the dull game.
On the return of the second stanza, Gadafi’s head coach Peter Onen made a double change to introduce Brian Kalumba and Amos Kirya for Frank Mulimi and Jamaldine Buchochera.
In the 64th minute, youthful midfielder Enock Ssebagala replaced Godfrey Lwesibawa in Express’s first change.
Nine minutes later, George Senkaaba beat his market before he launched a powerful shot but Gaddafi’s custodian Ronald Mutebi finger-tipped it away from the area.
In the 79th minute, Senkaba arrowed a through pass to meet Musige who was left with only a goalkeeper to beat but his low effort missed the target by just a whisker.
With eight minutes to end the game, Bithum came on for Steven Muchungi for Gaddafi while Express introduced pacy winger Joseph Akadwanaho for Senkaaba.
The result meant that the Red Eagles registered their third straight home win after clinching the earlier two against Wakiso Giants and Mbarara City respectively.
The win carried Express FC to the fifth position at 19 points from 11 games while Gaddafi FC sit in the 10th position at 13 points.
In the next fixture, Express FC will travel to MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo to face KCCA on Wednesday, December 22 while Gaddafi will host Onduparaka FC at Gaddafi Arena Jinja on Tuesday, December 21.
