The Uganda police has beefed up security at the holy shrines and sites in Namugongo ahead of this year’s martyrs’ day celebrations tomorrow.
Pilgrims are expected to gather at 4 different venues including Namugongo Catholic Martyrs’ shrine, the Anglican Martyrs’ shrine, Nakiyanja and Marmra prayer centre.
Fred Enanga the police spokesperson confirmed that Joint Security Task Teams are camped at all the 4 venues to ensure their safety.
Enanga called upon pilgrims to carry their identification documents and remain vigilant and focused while at any of the venues and highlighted need for them to be aware of their physical health and condition.
Thousands of pilgrims are already in Namugongo and more are expected to stream in thus traffic on some roads is expected to be disrupted to allow their easy movement.
This year’s martyrs’ day commemoration that is hosted by Greater Ankole dioceses for the Anglican church comes after the two year break by COVID-19 and will be celebrated under the theme ‘Hope beyond affliction’
Fort Portal Diocese will preside over the prayers at the Catholic shrine under the theme ‘Baptised and sent to witness Christ with love and hope.’
