Drug Authority bans sale of ‘viagra’ laced beer

The National Drug Authority (NDA)has banned the sale, distribution, and manufacture of “Stronger Weekend” products after samples of the drinks picked from the market tested positive for Sildenafil Citrate adulteration.

The Authority revealed that on the first day of February 2022 with the help of the Police carried a out a search of the factory in Mpondwe and collected the product together with other samples including two batches of The Stronger Weekend – Opaque Beer, which later also tested positive for Sildenafil Citrate adulteration.

According to NDA, sildenafil citrate is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction as it comes with various side effects such as respiratory and heart problems, renal failure, and sometimes coma or even death.

“National Drug Authority has advised the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to compel Thembomar Investment, the manufacturer of these products to stop with immediate effect the manufacturing and recall all the products that are on the market,” revealed NDA, Spokesperson, Abiaz Rwamiri

Rwamwiri however urged the general public to report similar “suspicious” products in a bid to safeguard public health.

Over the years, following a ban on some energy drinks in 2019 for containing ‘viagra’, a flood of similar drinks have continued to emerge.
