Uganda Cup: Sabir Inspires UPDF Past Impala Hill

First-half substitute Yassin Sabir inspired the army side past Impala Hill FC in a 1-0 victory in the Stanbic Uganda Cup at Bombo Barracks Grounds on Monday.

The game was cagey at the start as both sides preferred to keep patient in their halves hence having few chances on goal.

In the 23rd minute, towering forward Phillip Taban missed a clear change to convert a cut clear chance from close range.

Impala Hill nearly took the lead through Kamulegeya but UPDF’s captain James Begesa cleared the ball of the goalline.

With three minutes to play in the first half Shafik Magogo was replaced by pacy forward Sabir Yassin.

In the second half both sides made changes, UPDF introduced Andrew Kawoya for Roger Adriko as Impala Hill brought on Rashid Kawuma for Nasiff Kamulegeya.

Six minutes past the hour mark, Sabir nearly found the back of the net but Impala’s custodian Shamulani Kamya perfectly collected the ball.

Taban missed the target remaining with only a keeper to beat as his effort went above the crossbar.

In added time, Sabir finally found the back of the lead through an emphatic effort that left the crowd on their feet.

The result takes UPDF to the round of 16 as they wait for the draws to learn their next opponent.
