Nkumba University in partnership with the Chancellor’s innovation initiative (CII) launched it’s first Toit systems development program with support from a Germany company, Toit.
The program was unveiled during the ’embedded Systems Bootcamp’ that was presided over by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude Lubega on 20th June 2022 at the University’s Old computer library. “This is for students to get their senses dirty in programming using Toit, enjoy it and let’s get our hands dirty,” he said.
Toit is a modern, memory safe language with a state of the art editor integration including syntax highlighting, goto-definitions, and auto completions which when commanded, deployment of codes on your device takes just a second.
The Embedded Systems development program boot camp was geared at mentoring students in the Embedded Systems development language. “Today, we will be re-tooling students on how to use embedded Systems and internet of things and a like to be able to come up with applications that will support service provision in our country,” Lubega revealed.
The Chancellor’s innovation initiative with it’s purpose to popularize innovativenes, avail and create conducive environment to propell innovators into the transformation of Uganda’s economy joined in to see the programming language take it’s baby steps with over 30 students in attendance.
Speaking at the launch, the vice Chancellor Professor Jude Lubega put it to the public domain that Toit is a very powerful Systems language and the University is proud to have it’s students engage in the first ever Toit training in the academic setting.
“We are going to mentor you so that you are able to use Toit to develop applications that can be used in service sectors like transport, Agriculture, education and many others,” he added.
He further advised the students to utilize the availed opportunity through the boot camp to think outside the box and become more innovative in the computer panorama sought to be tomorrow’s memory safe language which will raise Nkumba university’s Academic decorum.
Every participating student expected to acquire a kit worth 250,000 Ugandan shillings. “A kit has been developed, portable and mobile for students to be able to continue rehearsing and developing from anywhere they deem fit,” he said.
Professor Jude Lubega called upon students to take up the opportunity at hand reminding students that the training they are acquiring from the Tiot representative was to equip them with skills that they should continously put in practice in preparations for the Hackathon challenge which is scheduled for 15th July 2022 adding that winners will walk away with prizes.
Started in February 2022, The Chancellor’s innovation initiative’s sole purpose is to enhance innovativenes among students.
