The National Drug Authority (NDA) Thursday 05th May 2022 undertook an enforcement operation on megaphone (bizindalo) operators to end illicit drug promotions in Kampala and Wakiso. So far 16 people have been arrested.
The operation targeting make-shift operators, premises, mobile vans, and foot hawkers who are carrying out misleading and unapproved drug promotions contrary to section 33 of the National Drug Policy and Authority Act Cap 2006.
Subject to section 33, all persons are prohibited from advertising, publishing in whatever manner, in relation to any drug to influence the use of that drug for prevention or treatment of any disease specified in the fifth schedule of the NDA Act. .
Futhermore, the section forbids promotion of drugs that may terminate or influence the course of human pregnancy or any purpose relating to enhancing human potency.
NDA spokesperson, Abiaz Rwamwiri said the 16 will be arraigned before a competent court of law to battle charges preferred against them.
He furthermore indicated plans to extend the operation beyond Kampala and Wakiso districts in a bid to ensure drug safety.
