UCU Canons beat KIU 69-68 in a dramatic clash to finish third in the National Basket League (NBL) playoffs at YMCA Arena, Wandegeya.
It was a generally low-scoring game that saw UCU’s highest-scoring player Abraham Isiagi go home with eight points while on the other side Fidel Okoth bagged only 11 points.
KIU started the game with quite the required tempo and managed to win the first quarter 26-11. Though UCU won the second quarter 16-12.
By the break, the Kasanga-based side was in the lead at 38-27.
It was quite a cagey game that one would strangle to pick out the best player of the night.
Fidel registered 11 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist, Isaiah Mabeny Ater had 9 points and 3 rebounds and Stanley Mugerwa returned 6 points as much as the rebounds.
For the Mukono-based side, Isyagi topped the chart with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Fayed Baale had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists while Lwabaga Ibanda had 7 points and 1 rebound.
The game got dramatic in its evening when Jerry Kayanga’s three-point shot levelled the game with only 9.8 seconds left on the clock. Before Baale scored the last and winning point of the game.
On the lady’s side Susan Rebecca Aanyu put up an emphatic performance after registering 20 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist as Angella Namirimu had 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
The league will take a higher gear as we get to the NBL playoff finals.
The finals will be played in the format of a best-of-seven series starting on Wednesday, September 28.
JKL Lady Dolphins will be taking on UCU Lady Canons in the ladies’ tie while defending champions City Oilers take on newbies Nam Blazers on the men’s wing.
