Algeria national team head coach Djamel Belmadi claims that his side is in critical condition following their loss against Equatorial Guinea.
Equatorial Guinea stunned The Desert Foxes to leave the defending champions on the brink of a group-stage exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Esteban Obiang slid in at the far post to convert a flick-on and net the only goal with 20 minutes left in Douala.
Algeria came into this game on the back of their goalless stalemate against Sierra Leone in the first match.
Now, according to Belmadi, their only option is to fight and saty in the competition by winning their last game against Côte d’Ivoire.
“It’s not the expected result and yet we did everything, we got several chances but the ball did not go in. We are in a situation of failure, it is a lean moment,” Belmadi said.
“Football is not always about rational reasons but let’s be sure, we will fight to stay in this competition. It will be against a great team from Côte d’Ivoire which is made up of players playing in the biggest leagues.”
“Regarding the opponent, Equatorial Guinea, they defended with a lot of desire, determination and we couldn’t find the fault, it’s a situation of failure,” he added.
The victory handed the Nzalang Nacional their first win of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 while Algeria remained with a solitary point after two matches.
