Following an impressive debut at the Africa Cup of Nations that saw them registering a victory, Gambia is now targeting knockout stage of the tournament.
The Scorpions achieved a historic feat by winning their first match for their first appearance in AFCON finals by beating Mauritania 1-0 in their opening Group F encounter at Limbe Stadium on Wednesday courtesy of Ablie Jallow’s strike.
Now, according to their head coach Tom Saintfiet, their focus is making it to the next round of the tournament, a feat that require them win one more game out of the two remaining group games.
“We were the little thumbs, the outsiders, a small country but with quality players, competitors at heart,” Saintfiet said after the game.
“We will try to win each match, by not putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves. We are realistic, the second g, disputed.”ame will be even more
“We won our first historic AFCON match. It’s amazing what happens to us when we look in the rearview mirror,” he added.
Gambia is the only team to have made it through the playoffs and then the qualifying group stage for the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.
Their next game is against Mali in Limbe on Sunday January 16th.
