AFCON 2021: Barrow Carries Debutants Gambia To Last 8

Gambia registered a 1-0 narrow victory against Guinea in the round of 16 of the Total African Cup of Nations on Monday evening.

Guinea looked the better side among the two in the early minutes of the game.Mohamed Bayo found a rebound in the box but his effort flew in the sky wasting a clear opportunity.

Minutes later Musa Barrow passed through a forest of bodies but later was run down of space just after entering the box which directed his effort out for a corner kick.

Borrow later whipped in a powerful cross in the area but Guinea’s custodian Aly Keita palmed the effort away from the mix that was flooded with Gambia bodies.

With four minutes to end the first half, Bayo picked a loose ball and passed the ball to Ebrinma Darboe whose resultant effort beat the keeper but missed the target by inches.

In the 71st minute, Barrow slipped the ball through the box before he emphatically placed the ball in the bottom of the box.

Gambia’s Yusupha Njie was sent off the field of play after receiving a second yellow card with three minutes to end the game.

Morgan Guilavogui nearly levelled matters in the last minute but his effort parried off the goal post which was the last action of the game.

Gambia joins Burkina Faso and Tunisia who already ensured their spots in the quarterfinals.

Gambia will play the winner between tournament hosts Cameroon and Comoros.
