Namulanda stone quarry collapses, 5 feared dead

Part of the famous Wakiso based Namulanda Stone quarry collapsed this morning burying 5 people and 1 vehicle

A somber mood engulfed residents as they gathered to witness the tragedy in which atleast 5 people and a vehicle said to be an Isuzu ELF were believed to have been trapped in the rubble after a chunk of the stone quarry collapsed in Namulanda, Nganjo cell Kajansi Town Council in Wakiso.

It has been established that the vehicle was truck number UBL 229 N and the victims include;  Kagwa Ronald , Pontiano  Lubogo  , Kasule Vicent  Irumba, Junior and Abdul Nsumba the truck driver.

Police fire and rescue services swang in swiftly to ascertain the damage before they called in the services of an excavator to help in the recovery of those who had been trapped in the rubble.

According to Canaan Nsubuga an area youth councillor, the vehicle was loading crushed stones when the incident happened today, September 3rd 2022 at around 6 pm in the morning.

The Kampala Metropolitan Area Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that at least 5 people and a vehicle Isuzu Elf had been trapped under the rubble after part of the stone quarry collapsed.

The fire and rescue services team was swift enough to arrive at the scene and called in the services of an excavator,” said Owoyesigyire.

Reports indicate that 1 truck and 5 bodies were successfuly excavated from the rubble. The vehicle was damaged beyond recognition and the bodies were conveyed to Mulago hospital for a postmortem.

Police has condoned off the stone quarry till further notice.

Residents have revealed that part of the stone quarry had developed cracks that signaled an imminent collapse. They have called on government to intervene and help the families of the victims.
