President Yoweri Museveni has spoken against homosexuality emphasizing that Uganda shall not deviate from the normal.
“Western countries should stop wasting the time of humanity by trying to impose their practices on other people.”
Addressing a special parliamentary sitting organized under Article 101(2) that permits the president to in consultation with the Speaker, address Parliament from time to time on any matter of national importance at Kololo Independence grounds on Thursday, Museveni pointed out that it is not in the nature of Ugandans to practice sex that way and noted that legislators should have a thorough discussion on this matter.
“Europeans and other groups marry cousins and their relatives. Here marrying with in the clan is taboo. So should we put sanctions on people who are marrying their relatives in other parts of the world? This is not our job, if they are marrying their cousins that is their problem” Museveni added.
Museveni’s reiteration comes at a time when the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee is scrutinizing the recent Homosexuality Bill, 2023 tabled by the Bugiri Municipality legislator, Asuman Basalirwa.
In the bill, Basalirwa proposed that anyone who engages in same sex activity or who holds out as LGBTQ should face up to 10 years imprisonment.
In 2014, Ugandan legislators passed a bill that called for life imprisonment for people caught having gay sex but it was later annulled by court.
The Human Rights watch has noted that the new bill is a revised and more egregious version of the 2014 bill.
According to the United Nations, Uganda is among the 77 nations that have continued to criminalize homosexuality.
