Katabi Town Council and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have reached an agreement on how to manage the shared Nkumba dumping site for a month.
This came in a day after area leaders had stopped further dumping of garbage due to a lack of communication from KCCA on the ongoing plans to redirect garbage to the site.
According to Ronald Kalema the Katabi Town Council chairperson, after having a meeting together with other leaders, they came up with resolutions to address the challenges being faced at the site and the community.
“The following measures were resolved; Grading of the road leading to the dumping site by KCCA to facilitate easy access, provision of a water bowser to regularly water the road and prevent dust pollution, deployment of excavators to the dumping site to manage waste compilation and enhance efficient waste disposal, reduce speed limits, and restrict entrance to the dumping site solely through Kasenyi Road, prohibiting access through Nkumba University and limiting the dumping period to one month to prevent prolonged environmental and health hazards,” he highlighted.
In addition, the Katabi Town Council boss also asked truck drivers and other garbage workers to use proper language, “As Katabi, we have our policy here; whoever uses vulgar language, we punish you amidst the village meeting. Therefore, I kindly request them through the Lord Mayor to comply with us to avoid being embarrassed.”
Kalema concluded with an appeal to KCCA through the Lord Mayor to implement these resolutions to improve waste management and mitigate the challenges faced by the community.
The Lord Mayor of Kampala, Erias Lukwago apologized for not communicating to the authorities before using the dumping site saying “It was not intentional, we wouldn’t want to undermine anybody and that we take leadership seriously, so in this particular case we were just caught off guard and we wanted to save another calamity of garbage piling up in Kampala that would have happened in all corners of the city”.
“As an institution, we are going to have a meeting tomorrow, and we will take a final decision; we will present a report to our colleagues and also come up with appropriate measures in line with the conditions set by the leadership of Katabi, the mayor here and the entire team,” he said.
The Lord Mayor also pledged to send a team of engineers to carry out a study on the dumping site and again give guidance on how to deal with the issues that have been raised by the leadership of Katabi including the grading of the road as well as the, best treatment that can be done to guard garbage defluence entering the lake directly in its raw form.
“We are going to engage all stakeholders, including the technical people, councilors, and everything body that is concerned, and take appropriate measures to make sure that we do not make another calamity here,” he highlighted.
In conclusion, the Lord Mayor lauds the leadership of Katabi and the residents of Nkumba for embracing their proposal through a worm reception as well as requesting them to accept their apologies for the misshapes they have had in the beginning and also promised a new beginning for future cooperation between the two sister institutions.
This happened after the Kiteezi catastrophe, which left many homeless and several dead at the end of last week.
