AFCON 2021: Hosts Cameroon through to the next round after running riot of Ethiopia

Hosts Cameroon have qualified for the knockout TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations after a dominant 4-1 victory against Ethiopia on Thursday.

Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar scored twice each for the Indomitable Lions while Dawa Hotessa scored for Ethiopia at Paul Biya Stadium, Olembé.

Ethiopia found the back of the net as earlier as the forth minute of the game through Dawa Hotessa. Nasir was released down the right hand side, he got his head up and picked out Hotessa who made no mistake in slotting past Onana.

However Cameroon equalized in the eighth minute through Toko Ekabe. Captain Aboubakar launched a thunderous strike from distance which was well saved but the hosts kept the ball alive.

A ball was sent to the back post towards Ekambi who heads into an empty net.

Ethiopia was at it again in the 18th minute when Gebremichael had the chance to shoot at goal but he didn’t connect well and his effort was blocked.

Gebremichael was released down the wing again in the 25th minute, he had the pace to beat his man and fired at goal.

Onana saved but he parried it straight into the direction of Hotessa but he coudn’t sort his feet out and the chance was wasted.

In the 38th minute, Fai found space on the right, he cut back onto his left foot and sent another delightful ball in for Aboubakar, but an Ethiopian defender was well placed to turn behind for a corner.

Ekambi drifted in from the left hand side in the 48th minute, tried to find Choupo-Moting but it was easily collected by the goalkeeper.

Ethiopia finally scored the second goal in the 52nd minute when Choupo-Moting played Fai in down the right, he hanged the ball towards the back post and it is captain fantastic Aboubakar who powered a thunderous header home.

Two minutes later, Cameroon got the third goal when they ripped through Ethiopia, exploiting space outwide and it was that man again – Aboubakar – in the right place at the right time to slot home his fourth goal of the tournament.

The Indomitable Lions got the fourth goal of the game in the 68th minute through Ekambi. Anguissa picked out his run on the left, he cut in on his right foot, sit two Ethiopian defenders down in the process before firing beyond Shanko at his near post.

Cameroon will play Cape Verde while Ethiopia will take on Burkina Faso in the last games of group A.
