UWA Nabs 3 Suspects Over Poisoning of 7 Hyenas in Lake Mburo Park

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), working with the police, has arrested 3 men suspected of poisoning seven hyenas in Lake Mburo National Park.

The suspects were picked up on Sunday, 21st June 2026, during an intelligence-led operation in Akayanja Sub-county. The killings happened in the Kaburabutembero area of the park.

The arrested men are Kayomberera Steven, 55, and Lotee Joseph, 30, both residents of Rwekishwaga Village, plus Nayamuba Dickens, 40, from Rwakobo Village. All three are from Rwakobo Parish, Akayanja Sub-county, Kiruhura District.

They are currently detained at Kiruhura Central Police Station as investigations continue.

UWA says it remains “fully committed to combating wildlife crime and ensuring those responsible for harming wildlife are brought to justice.” Poisoning is a growing threat to carnivores in and around Uganda’s parks, often tied to retaliation over livestock predation.

Lake Mburo is home to a small but key hyena population. Conservationists warn that losing even a few animals disrupts the park’s ecosystem balance.
