Commissioner passes out student patriots at Kitala S.S

Over 400 students in S.1 and S.5 from Kitala Secondary School in Entebbe were passed out after undergoing intensive training on patriotism.

While passing out the Patriots at the school in Kitala, Sam Odong, the Assistant Commissioner for Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sports remarked that patriotism is one way of shaping a person to be a good citizen.

“Patriotism brings about a sense of belonging to the students since they can now feel that sense of belonging to their country and they can always protect their country, as well as being able to work in their country with a lot of sacrifice for humanity. So this all enhances the academic performance and also helps them to be physically fit, and also be able to be law-abiding citizens,” he said

Odong further noted that patriotism is about sacrifice by thinking about others before yourself, and therefore appealed to the students to also practice what has been taught to them.

“Please sacrifice by going the extra mile. Be it academics, be it discipline, be it standing in for others and so on. You need to make a lot of sacrifices,” he noted.

Ronald Kalema, the Katabi Town Council chairperson, emphasised the greatness of patriotism, highlighting that patriotism is the way to go, because that’s where we depend on building the nation into a better country.

“Let’s not just look at it in the context of government. Let’s look at it in the context of doing what is right at the right time, in the right place, and if all of us do that, we shall have a peaceful nation, and we shall have a peaceful continent,” Kalema said.

The head teacher of Kitala Secondary School, Joseph Luswata, emphasised that the training aimed to instil discipline and foster love for both the state and the environment among learners and therefore encouraged students to first love themselves and then extend that love to their country and the continent as a whole.
